M3U playlist or Xtream Codes: what is the difference?
IPTV providers usually send a subscription in one of two forms: an M3U playlist address, or an Xtream Codes login with a server, username and password. Both open the same channels. They differ in how much extra information the player receives.
In short
An M3U playlist is a text file that lists channels and their stream addresses. Xtream Codes is a login to the provider's server, which gives the player channels, films, series, the programme guide and catch-up in separate, organised parts.
M3U playlist
An M3U address ends in .m3u or .m3u8, or contains get.php with your login in it. The player downloads one file and reads every channel from it. Films and series appear only if the provider puts them in the same file, and the programme guide comes from a separate address that the playlist names, or from the provider when the address carries your login.
M3U is the most widely supported form: almost every player and device can read it.
Xtream Codes
An Xtream Codes login has three parts: the server address with its port, a username and a password. The player asks the server for live channels, films and series separately, with posters, descriptions and the programme guide included.
This makes large subscriptions easier to browse, and catch-up only works when the provider exposes it, which is usually through Xtream Codes.
Which one should I use?
If your provider offers both, choose Xtream Codes: you get films and series sorted, artwork and the guide without extra steps. Use M3U when it is the only option, or for a small list of free channels.
Playova accepts both. You can also add more than one source and switch between them.
Questions and answers
Can I turn Xtream Codes into an M3U address?
Many providers offer an M3U address built from the same login. Ask your provider for it; Playova can use either.
Where do I find my M3U address or Xtream login?
In the welcome email or customer area of your IPTV provider. Playova does not supply sources.
