How to choose an IPTV player for an LG TV

LG televisions run webOS, and apps come from the LG Content Store. Before you pay for an IPTV player there, a few checks tell you whether it will suit your television and your source.

In short

An IPTV player on an LG TV is an app that opens the playlist from your own provider, an M3U address or an Xtream Codes login, and shows its channels, films and series with a programme guide. The player does not include channels. What plays depends on the player, on your LG model and webOS version, and on the streams your provider sends.

Check your webOS version first

Open the television's settings and look for the webOS or software version in the general or support section. Newer players often need webOS 6, which came with 2021 models, or later. An older television may only offer older apps, or none at all.

What to look for in the player

Most players can open a list. The differences appear with a large list, a weak connection or an unusual stream.

  • Both M3U and Xtream Codes, so you are not tied to one provider format.
  • A programme guide that loads from your provider and stays fast with thousands of channels.
  • Catch-up from the guide when your provider keeps an archive.
  • Control of audio and subtitle tracks, because many films carry several.
  • Clear messages that say whether a failure comes from the provider, the connection or the television.
  • A trial long enough to test your own list before you pay.

Audio and subtitles on LG

The television decodes the sound itself, so which audio formats play depends on the model. A good player repackages the stream without converting it and keeps every audio track, then lets the television do what it can. Text subtitles inside a film need the player's help on many models; picture-based subtitles are harder and may not show.

Where Playova for LG stands

Playova for LG webOS is being prepared for the LG Content Store and is not available to install yet. Until it is, you can use Playova on a Fire TV stick from the Amazon Appstore, on an Android TV or Google TV device as an early-access download, or on a computer connected to the television: Windows through Microsoft Store, Linux, or Mac in early access.

Questions and answers

Is Playova available on the LG Content Store?

Not yet. The LG version is being prepared. Playova is available today on Fire TV, Windows, Linux and Android phones, on Mac in early access, and as an early-access download for Android TV and Google TV.

Does an IPTV player on LG include channels?

No. A player opens the playlist from the provider you subscribe to. If you do not have a provider, the player has nothing to show.

Why does a channel play on my computer but not on my LG TV?

The television decodes video and sound itself, and some formats are not supported on every model. The same stream can play on a computer, which has more decoders.
